Summit Mount Whitney with a daypack and avoid the crowds and 6,100' gain and loss in 21.4 miles of the Whitney Portal trail. This trip takes you into the Sierra backcountry from Horseshoe Meadow. You will hike along a section of the Pacific Crest Trail to the west side of Mount Whitney, where you will walk up 3,000' from our camp at Guitar Lake to the Summit. An early start lets enjoy the expansive views from the top before the crowds arrive. You'll return to Horseshoe Meadow by way of beautiful Rock Creek. The crew will furnish delicious meals with a cook to handle all the kitchen chores. Chairs are furnished to relax in camp. In case of rain, the wranglers will put up a large tarp to sit under. A sit-down toilet will be provided at each camp with a privacy tent. Mules will carry all equipment, food, and personal gear not needed for your "day hikes" along the PCT and to the top of Mount Whitney.

Sequoia / Kings Canyon National Park is truly a land of Giants. The General Sherman Sequoia Tree is the largest tree in the world (by volume) and is between 1800 and 2700 years old. We will see immense and rare giant sequoias in one of their few remaining groves, as these old growth redwood behemoths have fortunately been preserved. You will walk through groves of leviathan trees that are centuries or even millenia old and can grow more than 300' tall.

This is the Sierra high country. You will "day hike" to the top of Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the contiguous United States, climb over seven passes, and walk down the famous golden staircase. Travelling above tree line much of time affords you expansive views of the glacier sculpted granite peaks and canyons of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The varied landscape rewards you with trout-filled lakes and streams, cascades and waterfalls, dense forests, and serene meadows. You will enter the wilderness from Horseshoe Meadow and follow the Pacific Crest Trail for three days to stage for the ascent of Mount Whitney from Guitar Lake. The top of Mount Whitney begins the start of a 72-mile trek along the southern third of the John Muir Trail before exiting over Bishop Pass to South Lake.

At 14,505' the summit of Mount Whitney is the highest point in the lower 48 of the United States. You already know that summiting is a life-list goal for some and a nonpareil personal challenge that will give you a great deal of personal satisfaction. And for the rest of your life, you can impress your friends by casually mentioning your feat in conversation. But what you may not know is just how beautiful the rest of the High Sierra is, with stunning all day views of distant lesser known and unnamed peaks, beautiful mountain lakes and redolent wildflowers. Because of all this, and the fact that we will hike along the famous John Muir Trail (and Pacific Crest Trail), this is one of the most popular and sought after hiking destinations there is.
