For close range puffin observation and photography, no other birding destination can compare, as Machias Seal Island is the largest puffin colony on the coast of Maine! In addition to the nesting seabirds, other species commonly spotted are guillemots, eiders, gannets, shearwaters and storm-petrels.

We are located on 155 secluded acres along 3,600 feet of shoreline on Junior Lake in Penobscot County just 80 miles Northeast of Bangor Airport. Access by car via I-95 to ME-6. Access by boat from West Grand Lake (below), Bottle Lake, or Duck Lake (above), or by floatplane from Bangor Airport. We have the only boat ramp on Junior Lake. We boast some of the best fishing in the United States with over a dozen species available including Landlocked Salmon and two varieties of Trout. The lake has a maximum depth of 70 feet and 3,866 acres of pure, clean spring-fed water-rated at above-average quality by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Game. Our property is surrounded by 300,000 acres of picturesque conservation land that can be hunted for a variety of game. There are other activities for every age, ability, and interest. We are a pet-friendly establishment. We will be happy to assist you with packing lists and answer all of your questions either by email or telephone.

This workshop starts at twilight, learning techniques of low-light photography. We will cover camera settings and the pros and cons of long exposure. Downeast Maine has some of the darkest night skies on the east coast, the perfect conditions for capturing the Milky Way. After taking to the streets of Bar Harbor, we will enter Acadia National Park, shoot the night skies and learn how to incorporate light-painting into your night photography. After this workshop you'll be able shoot after dark, expanding your photographic opportunities.

We are the new concessioner for the 2024 season. We will be open from Saturday May 25th through Wednesday October 16th, 2024 providing carriage tours, stall rentals and equestrian camping. All of our carriage tours depart from Wildwood Stables, just off the Park Loop Road. The Island Explorer Bus (4 Loop Road) stops at Wildwood. While we don’t offer horseback riding, we would be more than happy to get you and your family on a carriage tour.
