If you're a birder or a nature lover, take a half day excursion to Machias Seal Island, summer home to spectacular nesting colonies of Atlantic puffins, Razorbills, Common murres and Arctic terns, among others. For close range puffin observation and photography, no other birding destination can compare, as Machias Seal Island is the largest puffin colony on the coast of Maine! In addition to the nesting seabirds, other species commonly spotted are guillemots, eiders, gannets, shearwaters and storm-petrels.

We are the new concessioner for the 2024 season. We will be open from Saturday May 25th through Wednesday October 16th, 2024 providing carriage tours, stall rentals and equestrian camping. All of our carriage tours depart from Wildwood Stables, just off the Park Loop Road. The Island Explorer Bus (4 Loop Road) stops at Wildwood. While we don’t offer horseback riding, we would be more than happy to get you and your family on a carriage tour.

This workshop starts at twilight, learning techniques of low-light photography. We will cover camera settings and the pros and cons of long exposure. Downeast Maine has some of the darkest night skies on the east coast, the perfect conditions for capturing the Milky Way. After taking to the streets of Bar Harbor, we will enter Acadia National Park, shoot the night skies and learn how to incorporate light-painting into your night photography. Everyone is excited to pull a few lobster traps. We will haul, bait, and explain how the traps work, and discuss the biology of lobsters. Learn how lobstermen are protecting this thriving industry while harvesting 120 million pounds of lobster annually. At $4 per pound that is nearly half a billion dollars fueling the coastal Maine communities. Most lobsters migrate closer or further from shore depending on the seasons. They may move up to 5 or 6 miles in a year, going closer to shore in warm weather, and offshore for stable, deeper water in late fall. In May the abundance of Lobsters close to shore is still low. Heading east we will look for a breeding pair of bald eagles. East Bunker Ledge is a favorite spot for watching seals as they swim, fish and sunbathe on the rocks. We'll cruise home past the Cranberry Islands, where a 200-year old fishing village continues to thrive by the ways of the sea.
