Come with us on a fascinating journey through one of the Inside Passage's best-kept secrets! This is a full-day tour with a unique opportunity to go ashore in the Stikine/LeConte Wilderness. Of the many glaciers that the famous naturalist John Muir explored, he claimed the LeConte Glacier was his favorite. You won't believe your eyes or ears when you see the stunning blue icebergs and hear the thunder of thousand-year-old ice crashing into the sea. You'll start out with a scenic eight-mile coastal drive to rustic Herring Cove and the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary. The sanctuary is a temperate rainforest, nestled into the Tongass National Forest. When you arrive, a naturalist guide will be on hand to take you on a 0.75 mile guided rainforest exploration along an improved trail amongst stands of hemlock, spruce and cedar trees. The forest floor is covered with mosses, wild flowers and a variety of berries. Your guide will lead you to a protected open estuary where you follow Herring Creek along an elevated wooden boardwalk overlooking grassy wetlands. During the seasonal spawning season, bears and seals feed on salmon in Herring Creek. Bald eagles and other birds wait for scraps in the estuary. Sitka black tail deer, mink and marten also frequent the area. Weather, tides, and seasonal ecosystem changes result in varying levels and type of wildlife activity.

Bear Creek Outfitters in Juneau, Alaska, provides the best brown bear viewing opportunity by taking you to the Pack Creek bear viewing area. Once in a lifetime Alaskan adventures take place at Pack Creek Brown Bear Sanctuary! Experience the world renowned site located 30 air miles outside of Juneau, on Admiralty Island National Monument. Enjoy a sightseeing floatplane ride to and from Pack Creek bear viewing area. Once you have landed and made your way to the shore your guide will introduce you to the amazing wilderness location of the Pack Creek Bear Preserve. The native Tlingit people call this impressive island “Kootznoowoo,” meaning “Fortress of the Bear.” Indeed, Admiralty Island is home to the highest concentration of brown bears in the world. When you arrive at the sanctuary, a naturalist guide will join you, bringing the rich forest to life as you walk along an improved trail. You'll be surrounded by magnificent stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar trees. And soon you'll be watching for wild bears in search of spawning salmon and ample berries. These are safe, protected raised boardwalks, and you can expect to have an intimate viewing experience. To reduce environmental impacts, only a limited number of groups have access to this private bear viewing area. Your guide will lead you along another boardwalk system perched over the grassy wetlands alongside Herring Creek. You'll now observe a rich run of spawning salmon and the bears and seals that come to fish for them, along with bald eagles and other birds that wait for scraps in the tidal estuary nearby.

After a narrated drive to Douglas Island you'll be surrounded with mountain views and pristine old growth forest. Once you've arrived at the lodge, you'll be greeted by friendly and knowledgeable guides who will outfit you with top of the line gear. We take fun seriously, so you'll have a safety briefing and optional practice zips before taking your "leap of faith" into the trees. As you make your way through 5 ziplines, with the longest zip being about 600 feet long, you and your guide will stop and land in fully enclosed treehouse platforms where you can take in the scenery or snap some pictures. Hear about living in Southeast Alaska and the forest flora and fauna you're seeing. Close to the end of your trip, you'll cross a suspension bridge over a rushing stream. Top off your tour by embracing your inner lumberjack and try your hand at Axe Throwing. Back at the lodge you'll have time to watch a slideshow of the pictures your guide has taken of you during your adventure. There's a gift shop where you can purchase your pictures and other mementos of your time in the trees.
