The class covers the absolute essentials for climbing steep rock and is a valuable course for those wishing to pursue mountaineering. Course itinerary: equipment, knots, anchoring, belaying, communication signals, rating system, climbing techniques, and rappelling. Classes are taught on low-angle, moderate rock suitable for novices.

Cliffhanger Guides is a culmination of the work and life experiences of Seth Zaharias, Sabra Purdy, and our amazing staff. We are the only rock climbing guide service in Joshua Tree to have a brick and mortar presence located in the heart of the community on Park blvd directly across the street from the JTNP visitor center. We have built a upcycled Conex shipping container building that is 70% recycled materials, solar powered, all art project on the outside and all business on the inside. Please see the above image. At Cliffhanger Guides we believe that anybody can rock climb. We play with kids age 3-103, all shapes, sizes, and ability levels. We are dedicated to expanding people’s horizons and giving them a chance to connect with the natural world and all that it has to offer. Rock climbing is a great medium for discovering the outdoors, building strength and flexibility, and cultivating life-long friendships. Rock Climbing is exciting, rewarding, and highly adventurous; all attributes we believe contribute to happy, satisfied people.

Our full days are 8 hours in duration. All rock climbing equipment (as needed), private instruction (we don't mix groups!), tall tales, and a gourmet picnic lunch is included. Climber to guide max ratio is 4 to 1. We typically meet at 8 am and climb until near dark or you say uncle"¦ These are big high adventure days perfect for climbers looking to climb loads of pitches, the climber that prefers a relaxed pace with no need for clocks, folks that have the inclination to see more remote areas of the park and travel the road less traveled, the seasoned climber that wants to climb it all, and for those learning technical systems for anchoring, leading, or self-rescue techniques. If you would like to spend some time off the ground in a multi-pitch environment, the Cliffhanger Full Day is for you!

The park boasts unique geological formations such as granite monoliths and rugged canyons. Barren but beautiful, it is a destination that particularly appeals to those who enjoy desert landscapes, rock scrambling and mild weather with little precipitation. The park features a variety of elusive wildlife including bighorn sheep, jackrabbits and coyotes. November is a great time to explore the arid and rocky Mojave desert because the oppressive summer heat is ostensibly gone and freezing night temperatures have not completely moved in yet.

Our ½ day is perfect for the 1st time climber, families with young children, the transitioning climber from the gym to outdoor rock climbing, those that want more than one adventure in the park in a day, the commitment-averse, or those on a tight time schedule. This lovely 2.5-hour trail has something for everyone! We head into the Black Rock Canyon area which lies in the western most part of the National Park. We'll take you up into the mountainous region for stunning views of the highest peak in Southern California - Mt. Gorgonio, through deep canyons filled with large Juniper bushes, Yucca plants and Mojave pine trees. We'll wind you up and down and up and down through trails lined with the world-famous Joshua Trees. For the less experienced riders we can keep the pace at a nice walk, but there are some exciting galloping sections for the more experienced or comfortable riders. Whatever your preference, this trail has it all!
